Story Time
This story telling activity is great for helping children develop a capacity for understanding and explaining events in sequence. Narrative Skills 3 years to 5 years Materials: One of your child's favorite storybooks Snuggle up with your little one and read them one of their favorite stories. Once you've gone through the entire tale, ask your child the following questions that will help them build their ability to describe events in the intended sequence, a key narrative skill. First ask, "How did the story begin?" Follow up by asking, "Then what happened?", and "How did it end?" You can also ask questions like, "What was your favorite part?" or "Which character did you like best?" After your child answers each question, you can ask them to elaborate on their responses as well! For added narrative skill building, this activity can also be done after every story you read with your child! If you're looking for ideas on what to read with your little one, some of our favorite titles can found at thefuturegenerationproject.org/favoritebooks. You may need to adjust this activity to fit your child's needs! To up the difficulty, you can stop in the middle of the story and ask your child to complete the story using their own imagination! This can be a super great way for them to develop their love for books, connection with you and narrative skills.https://libraries.idaho.gov/files/LitCentersNarrSkills2009Ssha_0.pdf
