Rhyming Containers

This story telling activity is great for helping children develop their ability to rhyme, which is a key part of understanding that words can be broken into sounds. It can also teach and reinforce the meaning of words! Phonological Awareness, Vocabulary 3 years to 5 years At least two containers and household items Here is a fun way to incorporate rhyming into your child's life! Grab some household items with names rhyme. For example, maybe you have a cane and a toy plane as well as a pan and a can. You will also need some containers or boxes that can fit the items! For every group of items that rhyme you will need one container. For example, one container will be for the plane and the cane whereas another will be for the pan and the can. You can have as many items and containers as you would like! Let your child group the items that rhyme into separate containers. Also, check to see if they know what each object is by asking them, "what's this?", before they place anything into a container. If they don't know, explain the new vocabulary word to them. This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance your child's vocabulary as well as their rhyming! You may need to adjust this activity to fit your child's needs! This activity can be made easier or harder by changing the complexity of words/items that you chose. Bigger words may be harder to understand and/or rhyme.
